AI on your website

AI chatbot for your website that answers from your content

An AI chatbot for your website is useful when it reliably answers your visitors’ questions using content that you have approved yourself. If it cannot answer a question with certainty, it hands the conversation over to a person instead of making up an answer.

I develop such chatbots as part of your website or web app and connect language models such as OpenAI or Anthropic Claude via an interface. I focus on verifiable answers, data protection and clean integration into the existing technology.

What a chatbot on your website is suitable for

A chatbot mainly reduces the workload where the same questions are asked repeatedly and the answers already exist somewhere on your website or in your documents.

Recurring questions

The chatbot answers questions about services, processes, responsibilities, or documents around the clock. Every answer refers to the page it comes from so that visitors can read more.

Extensive knowledge areas

On websites with many subpages, guides or downloads, visitors often find information by asking a question in their own words faster than by using the menu and search field.

Pre-qualified inquiries

The chatbot can ask for the key details of an inquiry and pass them in a structured format to your inbox or contact form. This gives your team more complete inquiries.

Multilingual information

Language models understand questions in many languages and answer in the visitor’s language. The source remains your approved German content.

Handover to humans

For complaints, individual offers, or unclear cases, the chatbot refers the user to the appropriate person. I plan for this handover from the outset.

Binding information about prices, contracts, or legal matters, on the other hand, belongs in human hands. I define these boundaries together with you and store them in the chatbot as fixed rules.

How your chatbot is created

1

Define sources

We determine which pages, documents, and question catalogues the chatbot is allowed to use for its answers. It should not claim anything that is not stated there.

2

Build a knowledge base

The approved content is divided into sections and made searchable. For each question, the application first finds the relevant sections and passes only these on to the language model—a process called Retrieval-Augmented Generation.

3

Providers and privacy

I select the right model provider with you and check data processing agreements, storage location, and the retention of conversation data. Personal data is only requested when it is genuinely necessary for the request.

4

Rules and handover

The chatbot is given clear guidelines on tone, topics and boundaries, as well as a defined process for handing over to a human. In addition, every visitor can see that they are communicating with an AI system.

5

Practical test

In a preview environment, we test the chatbot with questions your customers actually ask and with deliberately difficult questions. It only goes live once the answers are reliable.

6

Operation and maintenance

After launch, I can analyse which questions remained unanswered, if you wish. This results in new content for the website, and the knowledge base is updated whenever your information changes.

Technical details that are often overlooked

A chat window is additional code on every page. Many ready-made widgets load large scripts from external servers on the first page visit and measurably worsen the response time. I therefore only load the chat window when it is needed so that your website does not become too slow.

The chat window itself must also be usable. It needs an accessible Close button, complete keyboard control and announcements for screen readers when a new response appears. Anyone who wants to make their website accessible should apply the same standards to the chatbot.

Finally, a chatbot is only as good as its sources. Outdated pages lead to outdated answers, which is why maintaining the content is part of its operation, just like regular website maintenance.

In practice: Integrating AI into an existing website

For a multilingual platform from the German-Danish border region, I switched multilingual support to AI-assisted translation of the content. This also includes content that is dynamically loaded onto the page later.

The project is a translation solution. It demonstrates the task at the core of every AI integration. A language model must be reliably connected to the right website content, including content that is not present in the initial page source. This connection is also what later determines the quality of a chatbot’s answers.

Distinction: Website chatbot or AI throughout the company

My service is integrating AI into your website or software. If you want to introduce AI across your company, with workshops, strategy and operations across several departments, the team at AI Værk is the right point of contact. I am the contact person there for Schleswig-Holstein.

A chatbot is not worthwhile in every case, either. If your website receives only a few inquiries per month or most requests are highly individual, a well-structured FAQ page with a clear contact path is often the better choice. I will give you this assessment directly in the initial consultation.

Frequently asked questions about the AI chatbot on the website

How can I prevent the chatbot from making up incorrect answers?

This cannot be completely ruled out with language models, but the risk can be significantly reduced. The chatbot receives only excerpts from approved sources, cites these in its response, and has clear instructions to hand over to a human when there is no sufficient basis.

Yes, if it is planned accordingly. This includes a data processing agreement with the model provider, an update to the privacy policy, minimal storage of conversations, and avoiding unnecessary personal data.

The EU AI Act requires people to recognise when they are interacting with an AI system. I therefore design the chat window so that this notice is clearly visible.

Yes. The chatbot can be integrated into WordPress, an Astro or Next.js website, or a custom web app. The knowledge base accesses the content you approve for this purpose.

That depends on your requirements regarding quality, privacy, and language. Among other things, I connect models from OpenAI and Anthropic Claude via an API and recommend a suitable solution after testing.

The effort depends on the scope of the knowledge base, the desired functions, and the connection to existing systems. There are also ongoing costs from the model provider depending on usage. You will receive a written quote in advance with a clearly defined scope of services.
